The Rebirth of the Blues
Britain's Blue butterflies have had some hard times, but many are doing well with improved conservation techniques which are the result of understanding the complex ecology of these species, in particular their relationship with ants. The lecture explores this using examples from Norfolk and Somerset.
How Plants Work
Basic botany to help give an understanding of gardening techniques. Can be taylored to suit audience
Living together in the natural world
An exploration of the fascinating interrelationships between species which collectively are called symbioses
Understanding Natural Selection
Darwin's concept for the mechanism of evolutionary change is continually being vindicated. We shall look at classic and new examples
The Case of the Polish Swan
This lecture explains why there is only one white cygnet in this swan family. Wildlife genetics demystified and just a little about its discoverer - Gregor Mendel
The Origin of Species
We have been able to provide more evidence and clarify the mechanism described by Darwin since he wrote The Origin. We look at each mechanism using good natural history examples
Sex on the Beach and other Cocktails
Using the idea of cocktail names to give a tongue in cheek look biological significance of sex in the natural world and some of the more bizarre ways it happens. Quite good as an after dinner event!
Climate Change and its Impact on Wildlife
I began teaching about Global Warming in 1976 and nearly 50yrs later we haven't come very far in doing anything about it and the situation gets worse. We have a lot more evidence now about the causes, and that it is indeed happening despite the Climate denyer lobby. We also know a lot about what the impact will be. Not much fun to give this lecture but we all need reminding of the urgency of doing something!
